Dear ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ community,
Every February we celebrate Black History Month with events and cultural activities to commemorate the many achievements and contributions made to our state and society by Black Americans.
As a university, we support open dialog, celebrate diversity and acknowledge our past. I am pleased with many of the efforts underway at ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ, such as the development of a new diversity and inclusion strategic plan, and the reestablishment of the Black Student Union. One of is to embrace and grow a culture of respect, diversity, inclusion and caring. This goal is important to our faculty, staff and students, and to the communities in which we live.
This month, please set aside time to participate in the many activities related to Black History Month. On the Troth Yeddha’ campus, we hosted a First Friday Black artists showcase and screened a film about Maya Angelou. Next week, a Black history timeline will be on display in Arctic Java Feb. 21-28, and there will be a on Feb. 22 and on Feb. 25. Campuses and communities throughout ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ and nationally will hold their own events, enabling broader access for these important conversations and activities. ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ also highlights many excellent books, stories and podcasts in the Share, Learn, Grow archive that is available year-round.
Thank you for choosing ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ.
— Dan White, chancellor
