The state Science Olympiad competition will be held at the University of ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ Fairbanks for a second year on Feb. 23-24, 2024. Middle school teams from across ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ are encouraged to participate.

Science Olympiad is a nationwide competition consisting of hands-on, team-based tournaments designed to increase student interest in science, technology, engineering and math fields. The ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ event is organized by the National Science Foundation’s ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, the ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ College of Engineering and Mines, and the ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ College of Natural Science and Mathematics.

ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ middle schools can now. Capacity for competing teams is limited. Teams will have the option to stay overnight on the ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ campus.

In 2023, eight middle school teams and over 120 students, chaperones, volunteers and event coordinators came to ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ from across ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ to compete in the ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ statewide Science Olympiad. Students competed in 16 events, ranging from written subject tests to construction of bridges, planes and trebuchets. Students stayed overnight at ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ’s Troth Yeddha’ Campus dorms in Fairbanks and took part in social activities to expose them to a university campus lifestyle and the pursuit of a STEM career path.
