Well, This Is Awkward...

2014 | BFA Thesis Exhibition

Artist Statement

As an awkward individual I often find myself in the position of an outside observer. Often lacking the ability to properly communicate and enjoy social situations that are demanded of me by my peers. Because of this I can freely collect visual experiences to develop a narrative that is driven by the unfamiliar and uncomfortable. My art utilizes the familiarity of humor and pop culture to depict these experience through the filter of an imaginary world, which can never exist.

Inspired by pop artists and cubism, my art is intentionally naive. By breaking forms down into their basic shapes and colors, I am able to have a multi-faceted geometric piece of art. Through the use of thick black lines, I am able to reference the candid quality of children鈥檚 books. Leaving my pieces intentionally simplistic creates a narrative of the awkward and uncomfortable nature of the human experience. Through this approach the human experience becomes more humorous and relatable.
