Working with our Office
Every student who experiences a documented disability and is registered for accommodations, will receive a letter of accommodation from our office at the start of each semester. Disability Services (DS) will send this letter to faculty and staff, informing them of the approved academic adjustments the student is qualified to receive.
Due to confidentiality requirements and in accordance with the Regents Policy and University Regulations, DS is unable to disclose the student鈥檚 specific disability. Please respect the student鈥檚 right to privacy by discussing any Accommodations or questions in private.
After receiving a letter of accommodation from our office, there are some immediate actions required from faculty and staff:
- Read the entirety of the letter.
- Contact the student to discuss the accommodations in this letter and how the accommodations apply in your class.
- Communicate clearly your process with the student and respond to any questions they may have.
- Do not provide any accommodations that are not listed in this letter. The accommodation process is intended to be interactive and I welcome your input.
- If testing accommodations are listed, we recommend you review our Testing Policy. DS staff monitors the testing area. Academic integrity is taken very seriously and any faculty member who wishes to come in for a tour of the space is welcome to schedule an appointment to do so.
- All class material must be accessible such as, alternative formats for documents and captions for videos. For more information on compliance with accessibility please Contact Us.
- Contact DS as soon as possible with any questions you have or guidance needed in fulfilling the approved accommodations.
As per UA Board of Regents policy 09.06, these accommodations must be provided as written unless you receive a revised notification letter from DS. We encourage you to take this opportunity to communicate with the student to clarify how to use their accommodations. If you have thoughts on other accommodations that may help the student in your class, or if you have any questions regarding these accommodations or need assistance implementing them, please Contact Us to schedule an appointment.
