The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has good information on entering the U.S. at .

Going Through Immigration
Before leaving the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer, check your passport to make sure it was stamped and annotated correctly. If your passport was not stamped correctly, it is very difficult to have errors corrected after you leave the U.S. port of entry. It is possible that you could be required to leave the U.S. and re-enter in the correct status before being able to resume your academic program or employment.

Canadians:  Do not use a NEXUS card if you have one and you do not use the NEXUS line. You will not enter in the correct immigration status and will need to leave the U.S. and re-enter.
