Scholarships

There are many scholarship opportunities for music students at ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ.

The first step in the scholarship process is to visit the ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ Financial Aid website and begin the paperwork process. The deadline for this is February 15. If you have questions prior to applying contact the Music Office.

Scholarship Criteria & Procedures

Criteria

In order to be considered for a Department of Music (all of the below except the Fairbanks Symphony Scholarship) the applicant must be enrolled as a full-time music major or have applied for admission to the University of ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ Fairbanks, with music as the declared major.

To be considered for a Fairbanks Symphony Scholarship, the applicant must be a full-time student (not necessarily a music major) and must be accepted into the Fairbanks Symphony. Students will be asked to assist with such tasks as orchestra set-up and will be expected to play in all concerts as needed.

 

Application Requirements

All scholarship applicants are required to submit the following:

 

Include a performance through a digital upload service such as YouTube or Google Drive, or a DVD if electronic upload is not an option. The performance in the video should include two contrasting works displaying both technical and musical abilities.

Please include a letter of intent that describes what you hope to accomplish by receiving a scholarship from the ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ Music Department.
Two are required; one should be from a music teacher.
High school and college transcripts are required for all incoming freshman and transfer students.

 

 

 
  Submission

All applications, performance links, transcripts, and letters of recommendation must be submitted by March 1 for Music Department scholarships and April 15 for Fairbanks Symphony awards. Unless all materials are present, the application will not be considered.

Department of Music Scholarships

 

The following scholarships are available to music majors during each academic year. Awards are made in late spring for the following academic year. Read carefully, as the requirements for each award differ.

 

Eligibility: 2.0 GPA; Promising music student; Full-time only.
Eligibility: 2.0 GPA; Majoring in music, preferably stringed instrument; Full-time only.
Eligibility: 2.0 GPA; Majoring in Music Education; One award to low strings student, one award to upper strings student; May be awarded to Music Performance student if two Music Education awards are available.
Eligibility: 3.0 GPA; Majoring in music; Full or part-time.
Eligibility: 2.0 GPA; Majoring in music.
Eligibility: 2.0 GPA; Majoring in music; Part or full-time; Demonstrating motivation, potential and/or leadership.
Eligibility: 2.0 GPA; Junior or Senior music student; Full time; Preference Music Education; Demonstrating motivation, strong academics and/or leadership.
Eligibility: 2.0 GPA; Soph./Jr./Sr./Grad; Financial need.
Eligibility: 2.0 GPA; Undergrad or grad; Full time; Demonstrating motivation, strong academics and/or leadership.
Eligibility: 2.0 GPA; Incoming Freshman; Audition or live audition required.

Other Scholarships

The Fairbanks Symphony Association also provides a limited number of awards for participants in the Symphony. Student instrumentalists interested in applying for these awards must be a full-time student, but not necessarily a Music Major, and must be accepted in the Fairbanks Symphony. Please submit a Scholarship Application Form, two letters of recommendation, at least one from a music teacher, and a CD, DVD or online music link that includes two contrasting works to the address below. The Nanook Fine and Performing Arts Scholarship is open to incoming first-year students who will be studying either Theater & Film, Music, or Art at ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ.

Eligibility
  • Incoming first-year student applying to attend ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ as a full-time (12 credits or more) undergraduate in fall 2025.
  • Admitted to a bachelor's degree in Art, Music or Theatre & Film.
  • Demonstrate talent and potential to excel in the fine or performing arts.
 
Scholarship Amount

Renewable award between $1,000-$5,000 per year, for a total of 4 years. To maintain eligibility, enroll in 12+ ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ credits (full-time) for fall and spring semesters, and meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).

How to Apply:

To apply for the scholarship, submit a portfolio-based application that focuses on your work as an artist. Faculty from the Fine Arts programs will evaluate your portfolio or performances and award scholarships based on artistic talent and potential (not based on incoming GPA).

  • Upload to the application form or email completed application materials to uaf-financialaid@alaska.edu by 5 p.m. ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ time, Nov. 15:
    • Short essay about your artistic pursuits (200 words)
    • Portfolio/performance samples

Deadline: Admissions applications, transcripts, and scholarship application must all be submitted before the deadline (Nov. 15 for the following fall semester). Award decisions will be announced by Jan. 15.
